Historic Route Finder, 2010

Crimea Walk, Colchester Garrison, Colchester

Commissioned by Colchester Borough Council for Bovis Homes

The Historic Route Finder reflects the rich histories evident in the Cavalry Barracks in Colchester Garrison.

Picking up on the sites of wars fought across the globe and across the generations, the information on each of the fingers of this traditionally constructed iron signpost also relay the distance in miles from the new development where the work is sited to the battle zone.

On the reverse side of each finger co-ordinates situate the site but can only be read by certain military as they have been converted into MGRS, the Military Grid Reference System, used across the world by the army.

The fingers themselves have been inverted to suggest the pennant carried by the cavalry at the time when the barracks were first built, and the post and finial has been chosen to represent the pointed lance.

The work is installed in the centre of the pocket park within the new development built on the site of the original Cavalry Barracks.
