Mare & Foal, 2019

Back Road, Writtle, Chelmsford (site of the former Lordships Stud, Writtle College)

Commissioned by Stonebond Properties

The installation ‘Mare & Foal’ has been created as a legacy to the more recent history of the site formerly known as Daws Farm in Back Road, Writtle.

Originally a Dairy Farm, Daws Farm was first mentioned on the Tithe map of 1839 and it’s believed the Farmhouse was the farm baliff’s house during Victorian times. The farm was part of a 550 acre site known as Writtle Estate and was sold to Writtle College in the mid 1930’s for a sum of £25,000.

In 2002, Daws Farm was still producing high quality milk and winning awards. Later that year, horses were introduced and Daws Farm became a menage for teaching purposes and part of the college stud farm, Lordships Stud. The Stud now re-located to the Cow Watering Lane Campus, provides high quality housing for stallions, breeding mares and foals.

Inspired by the simple line graphic used on the Lordships Stud logo, ‘Mare & Foal’ is derived from photographs recording events and births at the original Stud Farm. The images have been traced and re-drawn on a computer and the resulting two images have been joined at a right angle tucking the foals head under the mares.

For the actual sculptural piece the resulting line of both the mare and foal has been formed from stainless steel square bar. The metal will gradually change as the surface weathers forming deep tan colours reflective of saddlery.

‘Mare & Foal’ commands a presence with it’s lifesize scale whilst simultaneously blending into the surrounding landscape through it’s linear form.
