Memory Plaques, 2009

Porters Avenue Health Centre, Becontree, Dagenham

Commissioned by Studio 3 Arts for Barking & dagenham Prinmary Care Trust

A series of workshops used creative writing in a variety of ways, with participants learning how to create concrete poems, mesostics and acrostics. They also used photographic imagery to stimulate writings from memory, worked on games of chance, and drew memories. We also developed autobiographical writing and writing from different perspectives, used line as visual reference and explored place and landscapes.

The statements, memories and hopes which came out of the workshops were crafted in vinyl and applied to acrylic panels which are displayed across the hospital in corridors and doorways.

The style of application and installation is not disimilar to the buildings signage and as such becomes a series of chance finds. This subtleness defies its message with some very emotive memories open and on show to the general public and health care professionals. There are also statements of localness and humour to be discovered providing both a distraction and a dialogue with visitors to the building.
