The Missing Piece, 2013

Various sites along Chelmsford High Street

Commissioned by Chelmsford City Council

The Missing Piece was commissioned by Chelmsford City Council to animate the public realm, specifically the High Street, encouraging people to look up and take in the historic buildings that form the main shopping area of the town.

“At the centre of Elaine Tribley’s discovery trail of work is an 18th-century painting of Shire Hall. Created by Philip Reinagle in 1794, the painting depicts a very different world. Yet much of the heritage it shows still exists in modern Chelmsford.  Now transformed into a giant jigsaw puzzle, the painting’s pieces have been scattered throughout the High Street for you to find. Locate a puzzle piece, and you unlock a piece of Chelmsford’s architectural history. There is, however, one missing piece. Look out for the puzzle box lid located near Shire Hall to find the full picture. Can you work out which piece is missing?”

The puzzle pieces and painting were constructed from foamex and the 'poster' from aluminium with vinyl print.
